Modelling and the movies will combine for a unique pop-up event during London Fashion Week (LFW) in September. St Martin’s Courtyard, Covent Garden’s newest shopping and dining destination, is launching a Fashion Film Festival to coincide with LFW, in collaboration with Silent Cinema. This is a fantastic chance to watch a film, on a full-sized screen, in the open air in the heart of the capital.
The free pop-up event is set to be the hottest ticket in town, and a chance to enjoy a different cinematic experience by wearing wireless headphones (no putting up with annoying mobile phone users and sweet rustlers!). The St Martin’s Courtyard Fashion Film Festival will open on Sunday 15 September with a salon fashion show in the courtyard followed by the first screening, and will run until Tuesday 17 September.
So what’s screening?
This year sees an eclectic line-up showcasing a trio of films which feature fashion in startlingly different ways.
First up is tongue-in-cheek comedy Zoolander, which pokes fun at the world of male modelling. The film follows Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) as he faces up to being replaced by new kid on the fashion block, Hansel (Owen Wilson), and fights against being used in a plot to assassinate the prime minister of Malaysia. If this plot synopsis (and casting) sounds ridiculous, it is because it is! But that is all part of the fun in this laugh-out-loud (and don’t worry you will be wearing headphones) comedy.
The second film is the fashion-industry favourite, Grey Gardens, a documentary about two women, the aunt and cousin of one of THE most recognisable style-icons of the 20th century, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. This genuinely quirky film features the unusual pair talking to the camera from their crumbling and decaying East Hampton mansion as they flit across the decades.
The final feature is The September Issue. The tagline for this documentary which followed Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, and her team preparing for the 2007 fall-fashion issue, was “Fashion is a religion. This is the bible”. Given unprecedented access behind the scenes at Vogue, this truly is one for the fashionistas!
Dates for the diary
- Sunday 15 Sept – Zoolander
- Monday 16 Sept – Grey Gardens
- Tues 17 Sept – The September Issue
Feeling peckish at the pictures?
We all know that the experience of visiting the cinema is never complete without some snacks (although mine rarely last past the trailers). You can avail yourself of some Thai snacks from the Suda usherettes, for the sweet-toothed, and those who enjoy a sharpener, there will be posh sweets, ice cold beer and hedgerow fizz cocktails from Bill’s bar. Even better news is the fact there will be free gourmet popcorn for all.
How to get tickets
To get your hands on a free pair of tickets through the prize draw (there are 100 to give away for each screening); click here and enter your details. If you are a lucky winner, you will be contacted a week prior to the screening. For those not so fortunate there will also be tickets available on the night. For live updates and further ticket giveaways, follow St Martin’s Courtyard on twitter @smccoventgarden.
If you’re not one of the lucky ones to win a pair of tickets, be one of the first to arrive on the night and there will be a number of tickets available for each screening on a first come first served basis.
If you don’t think lady luck will be on your side, ensure you have one of the best seats in the house, by booking in advance for dinner and a movie at one of the St Martin’s Courtyard restaurants. Those with spots to watch the silver screen are contemporary Thai restaurant, Suda, Bill’s restaurant and the Italian, enoteca Dalla Terra. You will receive headsets; handy if the conversation isn’t flowing!!
