To celebrate the launch of lastminute.com’s partnership with dance music giant, Hed Kandi, we will be delving a little deeper into what makes this superbrand’s club nights renowned the world over.
In the first of a series of guest posts, we will be speaking to some of the top DJs at Hed Kandi to find out what makes them tick, what their music means to them and what clubbers can expect this summer!
First things first – please introduce yourself!
Hi, I’m Ben Santiago, Hed Kandi’s Ibiza resident, and I’ve been living in Ibiza for seven years, hosting residencies from Cream, Ibiza Rocks and this year is my fourth year DJing for Hed Kandi at Es Paradis.
Tell us about your first Ibiza experience and how you managed to bag a gig at this clubbing Mecca?
My love for Ibiza all started when I came here on holiday and instantly fell in love with the island. Before that DJing had been a hobby of mine for at least fifteen years and as soon as I visited that first time, I just knew I had to return the following summer and make a go of turning my passion into my profession. When I got here, I was very fortunate and got given some great opportunities and it’s been amazing. It’s such a cliché thing to say, but the crowds here really are the best in the world.
So what have you been working on lately?
I’ve just finished mixing the Beach House album which has been the perfect start to the summer.
Excellent news – what vibe have you gone for in 2013?
I’ve had so much fun in the studio putting the tracklists together and as it’s one of the few down tempo Hed Kandi albums of the year, it’s been great to mix beach house anthems on CD 1 with chilled nu disco on CD 2 and round it off by going in with the deep house anthems on CD 3.
The next question then is when can we hear the final version live?
I’m really looking forward to playing some of the tracks from the first CD at our weekly beach house party at Ocean Beach Club. Beach house parties really are fun and different parties to play.
As a top DJ, what is your particular approach to selecting tracks?
I’ve said this plenty of times in the past but my view is regardless of genre, if a track is going to connect with you, the audience, then I’ll play it. Not only do you keep everybody happy that way, but it can also really make that particular day stand out. If you’re on holiday and you’re enjoying drinking with your friends and you hear a few old and unexpected tracks that you love, it really adds to the whole experience and makes that party memorable.
Anything else in the pipeline for you?
Aside from Hed Kandi, I’ve got my first Cream gig coming up soon and I’m also hoping to spend more time in the studio with Laura and Tyrrell.
And finally – last question – I promise! What inspires you musically?
While making music, I’ll definitely be seeking inspiration from ever vibrant club scene out here so expect to see me in the clubs on both sides of the decks.
Hopefully see you over here this summer!
