It is hard not to raise a smile when you see blue skies or bask in the warmer temperatures which we’ve been a waiting for. But they’re finally here and what better way to enjoy it than with a break to Scotland? There’s a lot to celebrate across the country, from our national drink and national parks to a former royal floating residence. We’ve listed a few highlights to inspire you as you look for short break ideas this summer.
Enjoy a dram
It’s a national drink like no other, so come and raise a glass to all things whisky-related in the heart of Edinburgh. The Scotch Whisky Experience is a fabulous opportunity to find out everything you ever wanted to know about whisky and it celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Look out for lots of special events including the creation of a limited edition commemorative blend to be released in the summer. And that’s not all. There’s also the world’s largest collection of Scotch whisky (which has to be seen to be believed) and your chance to sample a dram too. Sláinte!
Royal residence turns 60
Another must see, and idea for a short break while you’re in the Scottish capital, is the five-star Royal Yacht Britannia. Enjoy a sneaky peak into the lives of the Royals with a tour of what was their floating home from home for over 40 years. The impressive yacht turned 60 in April and features five decks of opulence including the Royal Deck Tea Room with scones to die for.
We’ve got the UK’s largest National Park in Scotland which celebrates its 10th birthday in 2013. Cairngorms National Park is one of only two in the country and, like Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, is a living, working landscape. Whether you want to ‘bag a Munro’ (that’s climbing one of our fab mountains of over 3,000 ft in case you didn’t know), try your sea legs at watersports, or simply fancy soaking up Scotland’s stunningly diverse landscapes; then these parks offer the perfect escape.
Don’t forget that 2013 is the Year of Natural Scotland, where we’re showcasing everything that’s great about the country’s great outdoors. From sprawling landscapes and built heritage, to nature and wildlife, food and drink, natural art and more, make sure you check out the website for more details. We’ve listed just a few of our great attractions, but you can also find lots more inspiring events across Scotland.
