25 Awesome Things: Pubs Outside Central London
So we’ve told you all about pubs in central London, but what if you’re looking further afield? Where are the best pubs outside of zone 1? Here are some of my favourite places to stop and have a beer. I’ll cross London to get to some of these pubs.
1. The Greenwich Union. Royal Hill, Greenwich. I admit, this is my local, and my favourite pub in the whole of London. I love it here. There’s a fab beer garden, great staff, yummy food and very good beer (Meantime beer is brewed in Greenwich – this is their flagship pub). Go here now!
2. The Clifton, Clifton Hill, St Johns Wood. OK, now this pub I will cross London for. It’s fabulous here. More than a little posh (David Mitchell was in here last week) but a great little local boozer. Good food, very good wine and a lovely beer garden.
3. The White Cross, Water Lane, Richmond. If there is a better pub along the river, I don’t know it. A trip to Richmond just wouldn’t be the same without a pint here.
4. The Priory Arms, Lansdowne Way. Stockwell. This is a surprising little pub. Nothing to shout about from the outside, but it’s a great little pub. Good wine, poker games, pub quizzes. And they sell cigarette in singles on the bar. I’m not sure if that’s legal… shhhhh.
5. Commercial Tavern. Commercial Street, Shoreditch. This is one of those ‘vintage chic’ pubs. But this one is pretty good. Last time I went they were playing the Pinocchio theme tune. Really.
6. The Morgan Arms, Morgan Street, Mile End. This pub is nice little surprise. There’s a good vibe, fancy food. Nice big chairs. All sorts of charity events going on too. It’s a local pub, but an interesting one that pulls in a pretty young crowd.
7. The Bricklayers Arms, Waterman Street, Putney. I’ve heard only good things about this pub. Seems to be halfway between gastro pub and proper pub and that always works well.
8. The Red Lion, St Mary’s Road Ealing. Opposite Ealing Studios, this pub is well worth the trip across town.
9. The Duchess, Battersea Park, Battersea. The roast dinners here are worth the trip alone. Perfect hangover cure. I’ve never been in here without a hangover, but it’s lovely. Very shabby chic, I often come out wanting to embroider cushions.
10. The Old White Lion, Great North Road, East Finchley. Who doesn’t want to go to a pub where they keep chickens in the beer garden?
11. The Cutty Sark, Ballast Quay, Greenwich. This is the best riverside pub in Greenwich. Walk a bit further than the Trafalgar (which can be a tourist trap at the weekend) and you’ll find fabulous food, and beer barrels for chairs. Lots of outdoor space.
12. The White hart, Church Road, Crystal Palace. Granted, this is the only pub in Crystal Palace I’ve been to, but it has a vintage clothes shop in it. Really! The food and drink is pretty good too.
13. Pig’s Ear, Old Church Street, Chelsea. This place is pretty swanky (according to Matt from Londonist), but then everything is when you’re in this side of town.
14. The Fox and Hounds, Passmore Street, Chelsea. This place is right by the station (always a good thing if you’re going further afield) and full of bright young things apparently.
15. The Barnsbury, Liverpool Road, Angel. This is a nice little gastropub further up the main drag. And it’s well worth the walk (and if you’re coming from Angel station it’s a deceptively long walk as well). Nice (cute) bar staff, little tables outside. Perfect in the sunshine.
16. Princess of Wales, Chalcot Road, Primrose Hill. I’ve only just heard about this pub, but apparently there’s a secret garden that you get to through the basement. That’s where I’m going as soon as I’ve written this.
17. Canton Arms, South Lambeth Street, Stockwell. Back down south for this one (no, I’m not suggesting you go to these all in order – that would be a heck of a pub crawl). The Canton Arms is a great little pub well worth going to.
18. Sir Richard Steel, Haverstock Hill. My goodness this pub is full of treats. If you like taxidermy anyway. This place is covered in it. And the little beer garden is next to Tim Burton’s house. Fab.
19. Water Poet, Folgate Street, Liverpool Street. this pub is hit and miss. Get it on a good day (a weekend or an afternoon) and it’s fabulous. Otherwise you’ll have to take your chances with the city boys. If you’re lucky you get a charming pub with a cute little patio.
20. The Victoria, Grove Road, Mile End. This pub is very cool and trendy. Full of young ‘uns with skinny jeans and ‘unique’ hairstyles. But if you can get past the rubbish lager on tap, there’s lots going on. Jumble sales, live bands, late opening. Lots of fun.
21. The Bridge House, Westbourne Terrace Road, Maida Vale. Right by the canal, this cosy pub is a treat. Nothing that special about the ale or the food, but a log fire, board games and huge sofas make it worthwhile.
22. Holly Bush, Holly Mount, Hampstead. Regarded as the best pub in Hampstead, you need to get there via some secret steps. I love pubs with secrets.
23. Southampton Arms, Highgate Road, Kentish Town. Some might even say that this is the best pub in London.
24. The Draft House, Northcote Road, Battersea. Great ale and Mario wallpaper. What more could you ask for?
25. Bree Louise, Cobourg Street, Euston. In an area that is pretty much devoid of a decent beer, the Bree Louise is changing all that. Worth stopping in if you’re in the area.
Have I missed your favourite off the list? I’m sure there’s many many more, tell us in the comments!
