Alright. Richard III. Grace. Pumping on Your Stereo. While Supergrass never got same recognition as some of their Britpop contemporaries, you can’t deny they know how to put together a great tune. And while recent releases might not have done quite so well commercially, these four mischievous chaps from Oxford still played an important role in getting British music to where it is today.
So, there are plenty of good reasons to be sad at this week’s announcement that the band are splitting up – especially if, like me, you’re of that certain age where you remember singing along to those upbeat, bouncy, optimistic hymns to sunshine and drinking the first time round.
The silver lining? They’re not finished quite yet, and there’s one more chance to catch this bunch of Strange Ones in London – on 10 June at the Brixton Academy. If you feel any sense of sadness at the split, or just fancy pogoing along to Alright one more time, you’d do well to grab tickets when they go on sale tomorrow morning.
