Rachel Weisz won the Best Actress Award for her role in A Streetcar Named Desire at The Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards 2009 held today at the Prince of Wales Theatre. Jerusalem scopped Best New Play and Best Actor for Mark Rylance’s performance, while Jude Law won The John and Wendy Trewin Award for Best Shakespearean Performance in Hamlet.
There were many accolades from the critics for Best Director, Rupert Goold for Enron, Christopher Oram, Best Designer for Red, Alia Bano won Most Promising Playwright for Shades and The Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer (other than a playwright) went to Tom Sturridge for his role in Punk Rock. The Peter Hepple Award for Best Music (new or revival) went to Spring Awakening.
