The Adventure Starts – in Birmingham

It is hardly believable that just a few days ago I was told that my application for the role of Globe Trotter for lastminute.com had been successful. After recovering from the shock, my wife and I have been looking forward to a continuous programme of hotels, spas, city breaks, events and holidays every weekend from now until the middle of October. We couldn’t wait.
We didn’t have to travel very far for our first trip – Birmingham, although you realise you don’t have to go far from home to enjoy yourself. As many travel websites suggest ‘everyone should visit their home town as if they are a tourist’. But for maximum effect they recommend that, if possible, you book a hotel and use public transport, guides and maps – just like a real tourist.
Our stay started off luxuriously where we were lucky enough to be staying at the 4* Marriott Hotel. Excellently located in the centre of the city our room was well appointed, comfortable and the staff were super nice!
As a special treat we also had a 3 course meal booked for us at the modern Metro Bar and Grill, Cornwall Street. Set in the heart of the business and legal district at the back of Colmore it is exactly as described a ‘bar’ (drinks and tapas) and a ‘grill’. We relaxed with an aperitif and soaked in the atmosphere. There was plenty of choice from the fixed price menu and Toni and I confused the server by swapping our plates mid-course to sample each other’s dishes. Why is it that other people’s food is often more attractive than your own choice?
A fishy tale

The next day we set off from the hotel early passing a few of the plaques commemorating stars on Broad Street before arriving at another special treat organised by lastminute.com – The National Sealife Centre. We took the children when they were younger but there is plenty to appreciate for all ages including the new 4D ‘sensorama’ cinema experience which was added at Easter. With Birmingham being so far from the sea it is a great facility to experience the marine world up close.
Later we headed down to the New Street area and made a quick trip around the indoor market – completing our fishy theme by looking at the exotic fish stalls.
We also enjoyed a walk along the City Centre City Centre Floral Trail (must remember to vote for my favourite in the Birmingham Mail) and walking to the Sparkbrook ‘balti belt’ for lunch.

There are many things we thought of doing but didn’t have time. Cadbury World, the Museum & Art Gallery, Aston Hall or any of the many open spaces like Cannon Hill Park. So when our whirlwind competition win is over it is nice to think that we will still have plenty to do in Birmingham. All we have to do is remember to take the time to enjoy it.
